Tanzania Shipping Company Limited (TASHICO) was established under the Companies Act, Chapter 212, on December 8, 1997, originating from the former marine transport unit of the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC).
Upon its establishment, the company was known as Marine Services Company Limited (MSCL) until November 18, 2024, when it was renamed TASHICO.
All assets that belonged to the marine transport unit of TRC were officially transferred to this new company on June 21, 1999, through Government Gazette No. 125A. The company began operations on August 1, 1999, with a fleet of 15 vessels.
The company continued its operations, owning vessels, ports, and related infrastructure on all major lakes until June 30, 2006. In 2004, the government established the Tanzania Ports Authority through Act No. 17 of 2004. This law came into effect on July 1, 2006.
As a result of these changes, some of the assets belonging to the Marine Services Company, including all port infrastructure, one vessel, office buildings, workshops, and beacons on all major lakes, were transferred to the Tanzania Ports Authority.
These changes reduced the company's size, assets, and some of its sources of income.
Currently, the company operates a total of 18 passenger and cargo vessels: 9 on Lake Victoria, 3 on Lake Tanganyika, and 6 (including one boat and five others) on Lake Nyasa.
These include 9 passenger vessels, 2 oil tankers, 3 cargo vessels, 1 tugboat, 2 barges, and 1 tourist boat.
The company is composed of three branches: the Mwanza Branch on Lake Victoria, the Kigoma Branch on Lake Tanganyika, and the Kyela Branch on Lake Nyasa. The company’s headquarters are located in Mwanza.
